About The Artwork
Very fine American Plains awl case from the late 1860's to early 1880's. Beads are applied using both sinew and trade silk. The design is both complicated and well balanced. It utilizes some of the most valuable trade colors of the persiod--the cranberry reds, greasy yellows and exploding blues in a deep almost teal color. Everything is original, but it does not contain awls. The smoked, brain-tanned leather is still perfect and supple.
About The Artist
The Northern Plains consisted of the Blackfeet, the Cree, the Ojibwa, the Gros Ventre and the Sarcee, most of these people were Algonquians. The Central Plains were made up of the Sioux, the Crow, the Mandan, the Hidatsa and the Arikara. The Southern Plains people were the Comanche, the Kiowa, the Wichita, the Pawnee and the Kiowa Apache. These people occupied the central portion of the United States, stretching from the north to south more than 2000 miles, from the North Saskatchewan River in Canada almost to the Rio Grande in Mexico. Ther east-west boundaries are approximately those of the Mississippi-Missouri valleys and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The total area approximated roughly one million square miles.
