- About The Artwork
- Rustic silver cuff, Navajo hand-crafted by rolled and hammered ingot sheet in the 1880's fashion. We believe it actually was made circa 1940's--1950's by someone who learned the "old style" in the 1900's and continued this look using early methods.
This very striking, large bracelet has little wear, but is full of character. The appliqued and hand-stamped decoration is simple and strong. Black solder was used to fuse the three chisel-cut disks to the cuff band.
Though the layout of this piece resembles that of the middle bracelet on page 191 of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest (by Larry Frank and Millard J. Holbrook II). The stamps used to create the "X" forms appear to be more in keeping with a second quarter to mid 20th century style.
This handsome wrist piece does have presence and is a true value for the look. There is no maker's mark of any kind. The cuff can be adjusted and we are offering it as a 20th century work.
- About The Artist
- The Navajo were the first of the Native Americans of the Southwest to learn silversmithing from the Spanish. Most Navajo jewelry emphasizes silver, with turquoise stones used as an accent. Some pieces are cast in sand or tufa molds, while others are hammered, using a male stamp and a female die.
