- About The Artwork
- The matriarch of the family typically tends the sheep. This female cups a tiny lamb in her left arm while grasping a shepherd's crook in her right. This is a tender scene completed by an extraordinary degree of detail with respect to the tree nearby and the mountains in the distance.
- About The Artist
- This Cochiti painter and farmer was born in 1920. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, Herrera came home, married his sweetheart. He achieved his goal of farming, raising livestock and continuing his painting.
His Cochiti name (Stimone) means A Bird. This artist is listed in all the prominent books on Native American painting: Snodgrass (1968), Brody (1971), Tanner (1973), Lester (1995).
