- About The Artwork
- Dramatic, very wearable, red coral and silver squash blossom necklace.
Crafted in the early 1970's by a talented Navajo who should have signed his or her work, this symbol of fertility and prosperity is appropriately set with red coral, a symbol of life's blood and strength.
The coral is left in its natural branch form. Each section is merely smoothed and carefully polished to show off not only its rich exciting color, but its near translucent purity and surface.
Each of the ten graduated squash blossoms is set with a coral branch measuring 3/4" in length X 5 1/6" in width to 1" in length X 3/8" in width. The naja is set with six pieces--five of which measure 1/2" in length X 1/2" in width to 11/16" in length X 7/16" in width. The sixth piece at the top is 1 1/4" in length X 3/8" in width and all are 100% natural!
At an overall length of 24" with an additional pendant drop of 2 more inches--There are 134 hand-made silver beads tying this beauty together.
It lies perfectly with comfortable weight, neither too large, nor too bold. Possessed of a quiet, solid dignity all its own; this necklace will not steal center stage itself, but help the wearer do so!
- About The Artist
- The Navajo were the first of the Native Americans of the Southwest to learn silversmithing from the Spanish. Most Navajo jewelry emphasizes silver, with turquoise stones used as an accent. Some pieces are cast in sand or tufa molds, while others are hammered, using a male stamp and a female die.
