- About The Artwork
- Commanding AND wearable naja and squash blossom necklace!
Its naja is 3 5/32" wide X 3" from top to bottom, excluding the silver strap used to attach it to the necklace which consists of 8 squash blossoms and 34 silver "hogan" or saucer-shaped beads.
Everything in this dramatic piece is hand made from ingot material. The sheet is rolled and hammered, then rolled again. The ornamental stampwork on the naja is deep and accurate. The curved inner crescent is overlaid with two different gauges of swed ingo "tri wire". There are so many techniques superbly employed in this very fine example of the silversmith's art !!!
The wearable body of this necklace is 18" in length with silver hook and eye. It may be lengthened with a traditional wrap.
- About The Artist
- The Navajo were the first of the Native Americans of the Southwest to learn silversmithing from the Spanish. Most Navajo jewelry emphasizes silver, with turquoise stones used as an accent. Some pieces are cast in sand or tufa molds, while others are hammered, using a male stamp and a female die.
