- "In Northwestern California were found the Hupa. Chilula and the Whilkut people. The Hupa numbered approximately 1000 at contact in 1850 and were located along the lower part of the Trinity River before it joined the Klamath River. . . Salmon and acorns represented the core of their diet in precontact times." Native American Basketry of Northern California by Christopher L. Moser.
