A single wood log, transformed into the upper torso of a countryman.

Dressed in a single breasted jacket, his left arm bent at the elbow, stationed in front of him, this wide-eyed man is lost in thought.

Details such as the man's mustache, the buttons on his coat and the creases in his thumb are endearing. Immense care was taken in the delineation of the man's hair and ears.

About Mato Tijardovic

A naive sculptor from a village in Yugoslavia (currently referred to as Croatia), Mato is shown working on a carving while kneeling in his barn, mallet in hand in a gallery brochure.

An exhibit held at The Art Wagon Galleries in Scottsdale, Arizona titled "The Hartwell Collection Naïve Art '71" included a different carving by Tijardovic.

The Croatian Museum of Naïve Art names this sculptor as self taught. There is at least one gallery in Croatia offering Tijardovic's carvings for sale.
