Hallmarks of the Southwest by Barton Wright, the revised and expanded 2nd edition describes Joe Begay as follows:

"A silversmith, he first used the mark "J. Begay" in1974 when he worked for the Montana Mining Company. In 1976 and 1989 he also created jewelry for Indian Hammers and for the Atkinson Trading Company.  His specialty is channel inlay."
