Happily the label from Hopi Arts and Crafts at 2nd Mesa, Arizona remains attached to the plaque's loop, identifying the weaver as Carrie Mowa.

This weaver was a member of the Spider Clan and according to the Schaaf book on American Indian Basket Weavers, she was active making coiled baskets circa 1930. She was known for making both basketry plaques and bowls. Family members were either basketmakers or jewelers.

Tightly woven, there is a slight degree of fade on the plaque's face when compared to its back side.

Coiled baskets made from native vegetal fibers and dyes, are configured at Second Mesa villages--Shungopovi, Shipaulovi and Mishongnovi.

Wicker baskets, made from native vegetal fibers and mineral and vegetal dyes, are produced at Third Mesa villages, including Oraibi, Kykotsmovi and Hotevilla in northeastern Arizona.
